Sustainability Efforts
At Fiddleheads there are a number of ways we strive for sustainability and work to reduce our impact on the environment.
Bulk Section
A generous portion of our grocery section has been dedicated to providing you with a plethora of bulk food options. These choices include grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, chocolates, tasty snacks, herbs, spices, health and beauty product ingredients and even treats for your four legged friends. We provide you with paper bags to purchase just the amount of product you desire - reducing the need for bulky product packaging and the chance of food waste from leftover ingredients you simply don't need or want. We also welcome you to embrace zero waste by bringing in your own jars, containers or cloth bags to use. Simply weigh your empty container and record its tare weight before making your selection from the bulk bins. (Learn more about the Bulk Section here). |
Composting - Food Waste
With the plethora of fresh options in our produce department and the addition of our newly built kitchen we regularly find ourselves faced with food waste in the form of ingredient scraps or rotten fruits and veggies. To responsibly and efficiently recycle this waste we work closely with one of our Owners who has taken it upon himself to process compost-able food waste from businesses and residents throughout New London. Some of our produce scraps are also set aside for a local pig farmer. While pigs can't eat certain items like citrus fruits and regular potatoes they love sweet potatoes and mushrooms! |
Recycling
In addition to utilizing compost-ables in our cafe we've also made attempts to ensure that any products we produce in-house are pre-packaged in easily recyclable containers. All of our ready-made Fiddleheads Kitchen dishes are offered in containers that can be disposed of in your home or here at the store in single stream recycling bins. While perusing our Fiddleheads Kitchen prepared foods cooler you'll also notice we've begun a reusable glass jar program as one more step toward sustainability. |
Composting - Trash
If you visit our cafe to enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or soup you'll find that all of our cups, lids, napkins, stirrers and even utensils are compost-able. Currently you can dispose of them in the tall green receptacle immediately next to our trash and recycling bins. Recently we also made the switch to offering biodegradable bags in our produce department. New studies indicate that Mater-Bi, the material used to produce our bags, disappear completely in a matter of months when submerged in water. This means no micro-plastic waste added to our oceans or waterways! |
Renewable Energy
Fiddleheads Food Co-op has been independently certified as a clean energy partner. This means, through investing in wind power credits, we are able to run our business on 100% renewable, clean energy. |
