Bulk Foods

Buying from the Bulk Department is economical, ecological, adventurous, tasty, beautiful, educational. Bulk looks stunning in its bins, all in a line of colors and textures. It usually costs less per pound than the same kind of thing in a package. It reduces wasteful and excessive packaging, especially if you bring your own container (I have been using the same flour canister for 23 years); just make sure to have it weighed before you fill it, so the weight can be subtracted before you pay for the contents! You can buy just enough for your recipe or you can buy enough for a month of Sundays. If a 5 oz. package of chocolate-toffee almonds would be too much for you, you can buy just 5 of them. I try to buy our bulk products as close to home as possible: we have Connecticut-grown whole wheat flour, and other products from across New England and New York, but goji berries really are grown in China.

Bulk department notes:
|
This is the bulk department in April of 2010, with many things repacked in little bags. These days, most things are in bins, unless they are expensive, sticky, slow-moving, etc.
